A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses.

**Coordinating Conjunctions:** Connect equal elements.

  • For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So (FANBOYS)
  • Examples: I studied and passed. I wanted to go, but it rained.
  • **Subordinating Conjunctions:** Connect dependent clause to main clause.

  • Common: because, although, if, when, while, since, until, after, before, that
  • Example: I stayed home because I was sick.
  • **Correlative Conjunctions:** Work in pairs.

  • both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also
  • Example: Both my sister and my brother are doctors.
  • Conjunction vs Preposition:

  • Conjunction: I left because I was tired. (connects clauses)
  • Preposition: I left because of the rain. (connects nouns)
  • Time Conjunctions:

  • before, after, when, while, since, until
  • Example: Call me when you arrive.
