Articles introduce nouns. There are three types: definite, indefinite, and zero article.

Definite Article: "the"

  • Specific thing already known: The book on the table is mine.
  • Unique things: the sun, the moon, the earth
  • With superlatives: the best, the tallest
  • With adjectives: the rich, the poor

    • Indefinite Articles: "a" and "an"

  • A: before consonant sounds: a book, a university, a one-way street
  • An: before vowel sounds: an apple, an hour, an honest man
  • General, non-specific things: I need a pen.

    • Zero Article:

  • Proper nouns: John, Paris, Christmas
  • Abstract nouns: happiness, love, freedom
  • Plural nouns (general): Dogs are loyal.
  • Languages: I speak English. (but: the English language)
  • Meals: I had breakfast.

    • Special Cases:

  • Countries (plural): the United States, the Netherlands
  • With nationalities: the French, the Americans
  • With "both": both the children
